Childhood’s beloved characters pave a road of understanding

By Kaitlyn Affuso

Sure, Sesame Street is a top-choice show for toddlers, entertaining them with fun, vivid characters, ranging in personalities, bright-colored adventures and interactive games that are teaching them, whether they realize it or not. But how about reflecting back as an adult? Adults may be surprised by what Big Bird and friends have to say to their audience.

1. “Oh, everyone makes mistakes. Oh, yes they do. Your sister and your brother and your dad and mother too; big people, small people, matter of fact, all people! Everyone makes mistakes, so why can’t you?” — Big Bird

2. “Never refer to me as an item. I’m a bird.” — Big Bird

3. “Just think wonderful thoughts when you go to sleep.” — Elmo

4. “Love and stoplights can be cruel.” — Grover

5. “Where there is life, there is hope.” — Grover

6. “Sometimes me think, ‘What is friend?’ and then me say, “Friend is someone to share the last cookie with.’” — Cookie Monster

7. “…time for sleep now. So close your eyes and dream of all the wonderful trash that’s yet to come.” — Oscar the Grouch

8. [Bert comes in room dressed in a suit and tie] “Bert: Uh Ernie tell me. How do I look? Ernie: With your eyes Bert.”
