Get Into the Holiday Musical Spirit!

By Misty Harris

As you gather together with your loved ones and friends for the holidays, bring us along! Our holiday musical programming on Classical 94.5 WNED will make all of your events even more festive.

Candles Burning Brightly
- More than two thousand years ago, in the days of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, the religious life of the Jews was brought almost to a halt by the ancient Greeks. But rather than give in to the pressure to assimilate, a band of Jews who practiced their faith in secret returned to their holy city and rededicated the Temple. Their courageous act and its aftermath form the focus of Chanukah, the Jewish Festival of Lights. Mindy Ratner and Bill Morelock offer a program which explores the customs and music of the holiday. My First Essay

By Stratton Rawson, Classical 94.5 WNED

Since I've taken up the challenge of presenting a show called The Essay Question, a few folks have been bold enough to ask me when I started writing essays. The answer is simple enough: like almost every other baby boomer, I began writing essays in school under duress. But I guess I had an advantage because shortly after I was required to write essays I began reading them: Oh, not my own or my friends' efforts, but essays by Emerson, Montaigne, Francis Bacon, William Hazlitt and E.B. White.

Artistic Expression

By Misty Harris

With WNED's Young Performers under way, we thought we would showcase the "other" talent of one of the musicians. Collin Everett (featured in Young Performer's first episode) is not only a pianist, he is also an artist. His "Rachmaninoff" shadow sculpture has recently won the James and Karen Greb Award while on exhibit at the Strohl Art Center's 55th Annual Chautauqua Contemporary Art Exhibition on the grounds of the Chautauqua Institution. Listen to Collin discuss his exhibit with Classical 94.5 FM WNED's Stratton Rawson and take a look at a few of his works.

The Death of "Top Forty"

By Stratton Rawson, Classical 94.5 WNED Sr. Producer

This past spring I turned 65. Now don’t smirk that way, it will happen to you too if it hasn’t already. So after a decade of seeing this question printed on a refrigerator magnet every time I reached for my pint of Cherry Garcia, “Are hot flashes a major cause of global warming?” I found a new magnet on the door. “Don’t fret, at 65 you’re still growing. That’s why God put hair in your ears! Now just turn up the volume.”

A Classic Celebration

By Misty L. Harris

Do you remember what you were listening to in 1977? If you are a classical music fan (and we know you are) you were enjoying your Mozart, Mendelssohn, Beethoven and Dvorak on vinyl records. Most likely, you would have been hard-pressed to find a local radio station devoting all of its airtime to this treasured music.

The Rhythm of War

By Misty L. Harris

I’m a lover of “period” movies. Movies such as “Last of the Mohicans,” “Glory,” “The Patriot,” “Gladiator,” and “Kingdom of Heaven” hold my attention more than any others. Well, maybe throw in the occasional Sci-Fi or mythological movie (die hard “Lord of the Rings” fan) and I’m all set! But in my younger years, there was always something that perplexed me about these movies, especially those with battle scenes.

A Blissful Microcosm

By Misty L. Harris

If a new visitor (without GPS or driving instructions) wasn’t attentive to the signs, he or she would miss the Chautauqua Institution altogether. With its brick walls and towering trees, the average eye would be clueless to the wonders that lie inside.
