Factoid Friday: 16 Noms

By Annmarie Dean

WBFO_AM_LogoWe just found out this week that WBFO-FM 88.7 / WNED-AM 970 have been honored with a total of 16 award nominations from the New York State Associated Press Broadcasters Association(NYSAPBA). Each stations received eight nominations and will compete against commercial and other public radio stations in all of Upstate New York.

Hopefully, we will be able to add to the two top honors from last year and four special mentions.  Winners will be announced at the annual NYSAPBA awards banquet on June 2.

Congrats to our news team for their continued excellent news coverage and accomplishments!

Factoid Friday: Building Events

By Rebecca Howell

clip_image002Time for another fun fact about WNED. We are always coming up with cool ways to use our building. One way is hosting special events such as Kid Fest and Antique Home Show. Kid Fest is an annual event which public TV characters welcome families into WNED’s studios for live performances and learning activities for children. WNED also holds an off-site character breakfast to entertain children in the Buffalo area.

WNED also holds an Antiques Home Show. The event, which will be held this year on Saturday, May 12, is a local version of the “Antiques Roadshow.” Here, you are given the opportunity to bring your antiques that are lying around at home and they will be evaluated by expert appraisers. Pretty cool!

Hope you enjoy your Friday!

Factoid Friday: Saving a Landmark

By Rebecca Howell, WNED corporate communications intern

clip_image001Happy Friday! It’s time for another fact about WNED. Did you know WNED produced a three-part series called “Saving a Landmark: The Darwin Martin House?” This was about Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterwork here in Buffalo. It provided an inside look at the process of restoring the breathtaking home.

The Darwin Marin House was built between the years of 1903 and 1906. It was considered to be one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s greatest prairie houses, and it’s still around today! It is located on Jewett Parkway right in downtown Buffalo.

Have a good weekend!

Factoid Friday: Fact #4

By Annmarie Dean

It’s Friday! While Friday signifies the beginning of the weekend, it also means that it is time for your weekly dose of fun facts pertaining to WNED.

PBSDid you know that WNED has produced 17 productions for national broadcast on PBS? This past month, “Underground Railroad: The William Still Story” premiered on PBS. Other national productions include: “The War of 1812,” “Chautauqua: An American Narrative,” and “Frank Lloyd Wright’s Buffalo.” Our productions department continues to work tirelessly to bring new and interesting documentaries to the national spotlight.

We are also very lucky to have had our news stories from WNED-AM 970NPR featured numerous times on NPR for the whole country to hear. For many years, Classical 94.5/WNED-FM would broadcast a 13-part classical music series PRIentitled “Music from Chautauqua.” The series was distributed nationally through Public Radio International and showcased orchestral performances from the Chautauqua Institution.

Factoid Friday: Fact #3

By Annmarie Dean

WNED_Corp_VFor this week’s Factoid Friday, I though it would be fun to provide you with an interesting tidbit of information.  Did you know that WNED draws from a bi-national service area that includes more the 7.5 million people?  That is three times the population of Toronto!  I had no idea that 7.5 million people have access to WNED-TV, WNED-AM 970 and Classical 94.5/WNED-FM!  But I do know that we are very proud  that we serve a bi-national audience through all of our broadcast outlets. Happy Friday!

Factoid Friday: Alphabet Soup

By Annmarie Dean

We have a lot of talented people who work for WNED and a healthy handful of those people have previously worked for NPR and PBS member stations; one person has even worked for PBS headquarters in Arlington, Va. How cool is that?! For this week’s Factoid Friday, I’ve compiled a list of those people we’ve been lucky enough to steal away from other member stations.

Factoid Friday: The Station of Good Neighbors

By Annmarie Dean

Back in 2008, WNED began providing WNED-FM’s analog sub-channel to the Niagara Frontier Radio Reading Service (NFRRS) as their new main broadcasting outlet.  radio.mic

NFRRS provides daily access of printed materials (like The Buffalo News, National Geographic and The New Yorker) to thousands of blind and print-handicapped people in Western New York and Southern Ontario.

Volunteers broadcast daily readings to listeners who are provided “reading radios,” which are small radios that can be turned on to the agency that ‘gives the blind a chance to read…everyday.”

Factoid Friday: Fact #2

By: Annmarie Dean

Happy Friday!  I’m still learning new things every day about WNED and today is no exception.  Did you know that in 2010, WNED-TV was the most watched public television station in the United States?  That is pretty impressive and because it’s the holidays, we wanted to take the time to thank our viewers, yes, that means you! A thousand “thank you’s” for tuning in!

Factoid Friday: Jay Moran

By Annmarie Dean

So WNED’s Hockey: More Than A Game aired last night.  We sure hope that you enjoyed it!  In sticking with the hockey theme, WNED-AM 970’s Jay Moran is this week’s Factoid Friday.

Jay Moran

Jay can be heard on every drive into work as the local host of Morning Edition…or at Sabres games! He even traveled over to Berlin for the team’s stint in Europe this past fall.

As the public address announcer, Jay is responsible for introducing the players, announcing goals and keeping the crowed excited during games.  He began his career with the Sabres after acting as the public address announcer for the NCAA basketball games that were being held at the Arena. The then-director of game presentation heard Jay and said that the team would try using his talent for a couple of games which turned into seven years!

There you have it, a little fun fact about one of our employees here. I like Jay a lot better than this guy, by the way.

Factoid Friday: Fact #1

By Annmarie Dean

We produce a lot of TV and radio programs here at WNED.  I bet that you didn’t know that we are the producers of a PBS writing contest for children in Kindergarten through third grade. In fact, our 15-year “Reading Rainbow” contest has been re-branded into the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest.

PBS KIDS GO! Writers ContestWhile information on the 2012 Contest is not available yet (check back in January), you can still visit the interactive website and read the winning stories from last year.

The greatest feature about the website is the Make-A-Mashup feature.  Children are able to create their own story using pieces of other stories written by their peers. They can pick out the place, character, object and words that they want used in their one page story.

It’s actually a lot of fun (I created a Mashup while doing research for this blog post) and a great way to get and keep kids interested in reading!

Factoid Friday: Veterans Day

By Annmarie Dean

Happy Veterans Day! We are using this week’s Factoid Friday to honor both veterans who work for WNED and WNED military families. Here’s a fun fact: November 11th marks the anniversary of the singing of the armistice that ended World War I.
