Los Graduados (The Graduates)

John Craig, Ph.D., VP Education and Outreach

The period in which the country celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month, (Sept.15 to Oct. 15), has
come to an end for 2013. However, we continue to educate, enlighten, inspire and entertain through programming and are supporting a larger effort through the American Graduate program sponsored by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. We are able to promote national programming through local outreach events such as an Independent Lens production called Los Graduados.

The two-part series broadcasting on Oct. 28 and Nov. 4 at 10 p.m. tells the stories of young men and women completing high school and avoiding the dropout statistic that plaques many of our large urban school districts. Our event, on Friday, Nov. 1 in the WNED studios, will feature local and national students who have had their stories of success and failure by speaking with Hispanic/Latino students from seven Buffalo Public schools.

With support from partners like Say to Yes Education, Buffalo’s Multilingual Department and local colleges, the goal hopes to raise both awareness and expectations to encourage students to stay in school, graduate from high school and participate in the free college tuition and services that the Say Yes to Education Buffalo program provides. This is our commitment to you and our community.
