It's the end of the 50s and the Christmas special left us wondering what was next for the ladies of Nonnatus House. Of course, babies are being born but this season gets a little more personal with the characters. What happens to Nonnatus House? What's to come of Jenny's new blooming relationship? Do you think she wants a baby of her own? What about Chummy? How will she handle motherhood? Sister Bernadette gave up the cloth for marriage. How do you think this will impact her new life? These are all questions that will be answered as this season develops. So who does a Midwife call when she's "expecting" change in her life? Find out beginning Sunday at 8 p.m. on WNED-TV.</p> <p><a style="margin-bottom: 1em; float: right; margin-left: 1em; clear: right" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZjP1IDxdPQHd4tcBI0qd49XImimxwEADJ5_C5OTnmfCLW1bI1_aFCksKSzGxEuekrSrURKFn9SVK8vaE_r2ZwGpmCw9OUYn0fVBlHePdGp-uqekJZYG6-1VRhAUct7mxiXjJe6V-ih0Fe/s1600/callthemidwife3.jpg" imageanchor="1"></a></p> Mharrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09695219368126209511noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-582327136917572056.post-15445034682213694382014-03-25T07:04:00.000-07:002014-03-25T07:07:14.608-07:00A New Face Behind the Mic<a style="margin-bottom: 1em; float: right; margin-left: 1em; clear: right" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTS_pbpdjdvYqSQ5FJ4ejCGr-4rUvO0dUqsqr1SPtWtbuVmpOlj63XZDbtFMe1QuizjsI-evabkYM0k6mkLb-RYROQ60ocvsw07-hpPyIiCtEeEuxDl7g2RlbK683pwbAp8P53TfwZJCdW/s1600/Berkman_Bob.jpg" imageanchor="1"></a> <p>By Gabe DiMaio, Classical 94.5 WNED program director</p> <p>A big welcome to <a href="http://www.wned.org/classical-94-5-wned-program-hosts/item/591-bob-berkman" target="_blank">Bob Berkman</a>, the new afternoon host on <a href="http://www.wned.org/radio">Classical 94.5 <a style="margin-bottom: 1em; float: right; margin-left: 1em; clear: right" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTS_pbpdjdvYqSQ5FJ4ejCGr-4rUvO0dUqsqr1SPtWtbuVmpOlj63XZDbtFMe1QuizjsI-evabkYM0k6mkLb-RYROQ60ocvsw07-hpPyIiCtEeEuxDl7g2RlbK683pwbAp8P53TfwZJCdW/s1600/Berkman_Bob.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTS_pbpdjdvYqSQ5FJ4ejCGr-4rUvO0dUqsqr1SPtWtbuVmpOlj63XZDbtFMe1QuizjsI-evabkYM0k6mkLb-RYROQ60ocvsw07-hpPyIiCtEeEuxDl7g2RlbK683pwbAp8P53TfwZJCdW/s320/Berkman_Bob.jpg" width="168" height="179"></a>WNED</a>! <br><br>
It’s almost time! “Time for what,” you might be asking. Time for the second season of “<a href="http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/programs/series/mr-selfridge/" target="_blank">Masterpiece Classic: Mr. Selfridge</a>.” This show is one of my absolute favorites! The plot is so good, the characters are brilliant and the costumes are beautiful. The show centers around one of the finest department stores in the world: Selfridges & Co. American retail tycoon, Harry Gordon Selfridge and his family find themselves in London in 1909. Jeremy Piven stars as the flamboyant entrepreneur and showman seeking to provide London's shoppers with the ultimate merchandise and the ultimate thrill. <br>

One viewer described it as “Disney on ice. With no ice. And lots of drummers.” But it’s so much more than that. It is the world’s largest annual indoor show, and last year was one of <a href="http://www.wned.org/television" target="_blank">WNED-TV</a>’s most-viewed shows. It’s not hard to understand why. World-class performers from five countries, stunning pyrotechnics, thrilling acrobatics, singers, dancers, comedians, and of course tons of sternum rattling bands and drum and bugle corps performances serve to launch this spectacle above an ordinary musical production and into the entertainment stratosphere.</p> </p></p><a href="http://wnedblog.blogspot.com/2014/03/royal-nova-scotia-international-tattoo.html#more">Read more »</a>mwagnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01142110595948226543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-582327136917572056.post-38660495033200998942014-03-04T07:08:00.000-08:002014-03-11T08:10:23.063-07:00There’s an App for That<p>By Carlton N. I think it's safe to say we are all "Team Bates" and this issue has been discarded of hopefully not to return in the next season. <a href="http://wnedblog.blogspot.com/2014/02/did-he-or-didnt-he.html#more">Read more »</a>Mharrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09695219368126209511noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-582327136917572056.post-14409153810951118962014-02-18T11:59:00.001-08:002014-02-18T12:02:04.328-08:00A Trip to the Theater<p>By <a href="adean@wned.org" target="_blank">Annmarie Dean</a> <p>For as long as I can remember, I’ve been in a love affair with the theater. <a href="http://wned.org/programming-highlights-tv/item/480-shaw-festival-2014-season-preview-the-shaw-festival-behind-the-curtain"><img title="shaw_combined" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: right; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="shaw_combined" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqTm5WOjeOueDNW5k6gl3QYA3Inl6sSiD2SlhVZ_jXfHC7N1cZFP2JMK_fV_p_5RnS06TAH2WW0NMp72cM7SPdqgUXIkNZckH2a28lKil2s1jQazUtQBrAKkEANdAZ59ZRVjo-KO4zlSY//?imgmax=800" width="240" align="right" height="188"></a>Every time I make a trip to the theater, I am always in awe of the plotlines, the talent on stage and the entire experience itself. <a href="http://www.wned.org/TV/Schedule/default.aspx" target="_blank">WNED-TV</a> gives viewers an inside look at this indescribable magic with two programs focusing on the <a href="http://www.shawfest.com/">Shaw Festival</a> in picturesque Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.</p> </p><a href="http://wnedblog.blogspot.com/2014/02/a-trip-to-theater.html#more">Read more »</a>adeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03661531650364467987noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-582327136917572056.post-25608594335236984442014-02-11T07:10:00.000-08:002014-02-11T07:11:13.369-08:00Musical Movie RideBy Misty Harris <br><br>I know I've said this before but Charlie Chaplin's <i>City Lights </i>is my absolute favorite silent film. <div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both"><a style="margin-bottom: 1em; float: right; margin-left: 1em; clear: right" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhb6N9nOAqK6PvsUTsFzL53NGiJDMcUYJxpLI37JfwAD4Q2JQ8pYjfId5680RpmCsh5lHA4vaLiVnwdqx4cuZBQbk6TIOymCD144fcXdsrXwB7OTB0R9bh4WN8snnd22cxqDI8vc2VishXm/s1600/slave.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhb6N9nOAqK6PvsUTsFzL53NGiJDMcUYJxpLI37JfwAD4Q2JQ8pYjfId5680RpmCsh5lHA4vaLiVnwdqx4cuZBQbk6TIOymCD144fcXdsrXwB7OTB0R9bh4WN8snnd22cxqDI8vc2VishXm/s320/slave.jpg"></a></div>If you have not seen it yet, I'm sure it's available at the library or for purchase online. The Amish are everywhere in modern pop culture, there are reality shows, news stories, parodies in comedy, and even a professional wrestling gimmick. Just what is it about this group of people that we find so fascinating? Is it the fact that they live without the technology that you are using to read this? Perhaps it is the beards? Are we just fascinated with their general methods from the way they talk to the way they dress? To get you ready for your dose of Amish appreciation, here are some facts about the Amish. </span><br>

When I was eight-years-old, I made a pilgrimage to the <a href="http://www.nps.gov/wori/index.htm">Women’s Rights National Historical Park</a> in Seneca Falls, N.Y. Standing next to a life size bronze statue of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, other planners of the first women’s rights convention and a few of the men who supported the cause, is something I will never forget. Women who challenge social norms and emerge as triumphant icons should always be celebrated. Throughout the month of February, <a href="http://www.wned.org/TV/Schedule/default.aspx" target="_blank">WNED-TV</a> will be airing “<strong>Extraordinary Women</strong>.” The series profiles women who seemed to have it all glamour, power, wealth, and adoration. Coco Chanel, Wallis Simpson, Martha Gellhorn, Agatha Christie...they were worshipped, loved, and sometimes even feared by millions the world over. With archive, interviews, and dramatic re-enactment, learn about the price these women paid for their achievements. </p> <a href="http://wnedblog.blogspot.com/2014/01/challenging-status-quo.html#more">Read more »</a>adeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03661531650364467987noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-582327136917572056.post-29372203904257135742014-01-28T10:50:00.000-08:002014-01-29T10:50:22.033-08:00A Look Back at the State of the Union Address<div class="MsoNormal"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif"><br> <table class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; text-align: right; margin-left: 1em" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"> <tbody> <tr> <td style="text-align: center"><a style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; clear: right; margin-right: auto" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjL2pepKI5CP2ps0vA-OKYmw3mFJXWfyupbKTQ5KyPf0sTzMbI24auov-5Tcec6SvdhkaRT7NPM0YKIuWwH7xcVjzWfIV63Ji0cNYhTxFnmYG7I34nQudlKlQOzlP2jK-O_RY8cZ_komL4/s1600/Obama_602.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjL2pepKI5CP2ps0vA-OKYmw3mFJXWfyupbKTQ5KyPf0sTzMbI24auov-5Tcec6SvdhkaRT7NPM0YKIuWwH7xcVjzWfIV63Ji0cNYhTxFnmYG7I34nQudlKlQOzlP2jK-O_RY8cZ_komL4/s1600/Obama_602.jpg" width="200" height="163"></a></td></tr> <tr> <td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: right"><i>Photo Credit: WBFO</i> </td></tr></tbody></table></span></b></div> <div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif">Before President Obama’s State of the Union Address tonight, let’s take a look back on the fascinating facts about the iconic speech.</span> </div><a href="http://wnedblog.blogspot.com/2014/01/a-look-back-at-state-of-union-address.html#more">Read more »</a>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00862525952661707561noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-582327136917572056.post-10295589836410588302013-12-12T06:37:00.000-08:002013-12-16T06:37:35.409-08:00Check out the WNED | WBFO 2013 Digital Annual Report!<p>By Steve Karosik <p><b></b> <p><a href="http://wnedcorpcomm.uberflip.com/i/189423" target="_blank"><img title="Annual Report 13" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: left; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 8px 8px 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="Annual Report 13" align="left" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidGCq03w09E4Q5i_tT9XY70g6qXEr-K_IWAmFwv51lc26G44oisV_FEmQojRG48sQJRGNRzhZolBLwOUboz9WUygvuvZ-CiTe7s0HR3jFPJYwpVBZumAQSlQITgBoeuENzOQBq0hnaGQ//?imgmax=800" width="185" height="244"></a>This year, we decided to make our annual report something truly engaging for the general public, our stakeholders and staff. In fact, those words probably had more influence in my choosing a career in public broadcasting than any other. But possibly the tipping point for me as it relates to that phrase uttered by JFK on his inauguration day was Friday, November 22, 1963. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicajn701XZGwjgnhIxttfQoTnTRYc10tA1ZMLBK-BK5XFX1A97oAlKr9CuubO3qwpsT6R5ewIc5WAduoi3u8PYULzUE46RQK0im1lHKAJn_Y2BX1uaSPHxRtbTrDgTW38sNCjum1Fy9xQ/s1600-h/GL004228%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="GL004228" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: right; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="GL004228" align="right" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBHiNr2fGDB8O052NDF97fdBA1gCZHlu7dxtALs7OZGV6B_GiHj8vTnrfdtWIJhNW8185CRXDsXzMkCYhFvry6Jllu82wusl-MNwNOb3XhR6YX8919R03WAeKg9ism5L9bDkh8wvks_KE//?imgmax=800" width="159" height="240"></a> </p> </p><a href="http://wnedblog.blogspot.com/2013/11/remembering-president.html#more">Read more »</a>adeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03661531650364467987noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-582327136917572056.post-74156509417822503652013-10-31T08:16:00.000-07:002013-10-31T08:16:29.809-07:00Los Graduados (The Graduates)John Craig, Ph.D., VP Education and Outreach<br><br>The period in which the country celebrates <a href="http://hispanicheritagemonth.gov/" target="_blank">National Hispanic Heritage Month</a>, (Sept.15 to Oct. 15), has <div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both"><a style="margin-bottom: 1em; float: right; margin-left: 1em; clear: right" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdMMqWCXuC10zEomQNMIpRcNmaopMcNmR5Qot6rdTLk9Br9A7Q0gfvF8ARqe504XjHkjFx_I3IPg65OMUy7gBpeqWVYMB6IpQ7Lh-Ui-MjxVbFS-PDxPWxH1jMezIyn2IGqlYJda9o9xfx/s1600/IL_Graduates.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdMMqWCXuC10zEomQNMIpRcNmaopMcNmR5Qot6rdTLk9Br9A7Q0gfvF8ARqe504XjHkjFx_I3IPg65OMUy7gBpeqWVYMB6IpQ7Lh-Ui-MjxVbFS-PDxPWxH1jMezIyn2IGqlYJda9o9xfx/s200/IL_Graduates.jpg"></a></div>come to an end for 2013. However, we continue to educate, enlighten, inspire and entertain through programming and are supporting a larger effort through the American Graduate program sponsored by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. We are able to promote national programming through local outreach events such as an Independent Lens production called <a href="http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/graduates/" target="_blank"><strong>Los Graduados</strong></a>. <a href="http://wnedblog.blogspot.com/2013/10/the-graduates.html#more">Read more »</a>Mharrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09695219368126209511noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-582327136917572056.post-10237140143425476992013-10-22T13:27:00.000-07:002013-10-22T13:50:49.316-07:00Tips for Prospective Music Majors<p><br>By <a href="http://www.wned.org/fm/hosts.asp?host=Wimmer" target="_blank">Marty Wimmer</a>, Program Host on Classical 94.5 WNED & Public School Music Teacher<br><br>I was a music major in college. My bachelor's degree is in Music Education with a piano concentration. Coming from a rural town and being first-generation college, I was woefully unprepared for music school. Fortunately, I was a hard worker, and with the help of some good professors, I was able to overcome my deficiencies and graduate successfully. Sadly, several of my cohorts weren't as lucky.<br><br>If you're a high school student planning to major in music in college, there are some things you can do now to help you succeed: </p> <a href="http://wnedblog.blogspot.com/2013/10/tips-for-prospective-music-majors.html#more">Read more »</a>Mharrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09695219368126209511noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-582327136917572056.post-700785632201226682013-10-08T11:49:00.000-07:002013-10-10T11:50:04.676-07:00Behind the Mic...In Front of the StageBy <a href="http://www.wned.org/fm/hosts.asp?host=Simone" target="_blank">Ed Simone</a>, Classical 94.5 WNED program host <br><br>Right now, I’m directing my students in a production of Lisa Dillman’s “The Walls.” This play is a challenging piece <div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both"><a style="margin-bottom: 1em; float: right; margin-left: 1em; clear: right" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJQRfx-P4tP4p-vkyodpV4PnDe73kh-OcS6PhBQjAuGR-z4EK63JWyCUmbIFISf11LEmK_4ZbZd70hShWsiVnZYIRHowfO9K9QKSQQqo6nGJFc2VQZNKvF2DFjADqSqeSF0mmeOPsL1AKR/s1600/astin.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJQRfx-P4tP4p-vkyodpV4PnDe73kh-OcS6PhBQjAuGR-z4EK63JWyCUmbIFISf11LEmK_4ZbZd70hShWsiVnZYIRHowfO9K9QKSQQqo6nGJFc2VQZNKvF2DFjADqSqeSF0mmeOPsL1AKR/s320/astin.jpg"></a></div>for students. It revolves around a young writer, Carrie, researching the lives of women who were institutionalized for “hysteria” in the late 19th and early-mid 20th centuries. Carrie has her own psychological difficulties, and as her life and the lives of her subjects intersect, the play becomes a tangle of conflicting emotions and desires. Helping my student actors navigate these treacherous waters is what keeps me going as an artist-educator. Watching them make discoveries in rehearsal and performance is a gift. And they do make discoveries---about themselves, about our humanity, about the process of acting. <a href="http://wnedblog.blogspot.com/2013/10/behind-micin-front-of-stage.html#more">Read more »</a>Mharrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09695219368126209511noreply@blogger.com0
