Celebrating Mother Earth

By Annmarie Dean

Sunday, April 22 marks the 42nd anniversary of Earth Day and what many people consider the birth of the modern environmental movement. In 1970, 20 million Americans demonstrated for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive rallies and since that rally, the environmental movement has led to many milestones, including the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Act. In 1990, Earth Day celebrations went global resulting in a huge boost in recycling efforts.

This year, you can be part of the Billion Acts of Green Campaign, where people pledge tasks as simple as using both sides of a piece of paper, eating more local food to driving a fuel efficient vehicle and organizing a community Earth Day event in celebration of the global day of recognition. The Earth Day Network is currently boasting more than 970,000,000 pledges!

Here at WNED, we’re doing our part to go green. Whether it is recycling paper, plastics and tins to our every day operations; almost everything that runs the building from electricity to state-of-the-art construction alternatives are made to be high efficient and help to decrease energy consumption.

ThinkBright and Well/WORLD and WNED-TV are also joining in on the Earth Day festivities by broadcasting programs featuring environmental topics:
