Way Back Wednesday: Lamb Chop

By Annmarie Dean

This week’s “Way Back Wednesday” should touch people who were children of the 60s and those of the 90s. Shari Lewis, American ventriloquist, puppeteer and children’s television host, starred in a NET (National Educational Television) special that aired on WNED-TV in October of 1970.

ShariLewisThe listing for the program reads: NET Children’s Special - Three Magical Tales with Shari Lewis. Miss Lewis and her lovable companion “Lamb Chop” host a fantasy trip into the fairytale world of “Till Eulenspiegel,” “The Swineherd” and “Valiant Hans.”

Children of the 90s will best remember her for the PBS children’s series “Lamb Chop’s Play-Along.” Parents of 90s kids will probably best remember Lewis for teaching their children this song (nice Zubaz, Charlie Horse), which I know my younger brother and I sang incessantly on car rides and at any other opportune time.
