Way Back Wednesday: Hear Me Roar

By Annmarie Dean

In 1973, WNED produced a series called WOMAN. The series touched on many different feminist themes and included guests such as Dr. Benjamin Spock, Wilma Scott Heide, then president of the National Organization for Women (NOW), and Sissy Farenthold, former Texas Congresswoman and candidate for vice president.

With the exception of programming done in New York City, WOMAN was the first program to be produced by a member station in the state that was broadcast nationally! Over 180 episodes were carried by PBS and it was also the very first program to be broadcast in color on WNED.

Check out a quick video from the show below.  Guests from this clip include social and political activist, Gloria Steinem and The Feminine Mystique author and founder of NOW, Betty Friedan.
